Balearic move to amber list throwing travel trade into chaos | News

The UK government has updated its travel lists, with the Balearic Islands moving to the amber list from Monday morning.

The destination, which includes Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca and Formentera, has seen a sharp increase in cases of Covid-19 in recent days.

Cuba, Indonesia, Myanmar and Sierra Leone will be added to the red list from 04:00 on Monday.

Visitors who have departed from or transited through these countries and territories in the previous ten days will be refused entry into England.

Only British and Irish citizens, or those with residence rights (including long-term visa holders), will be allowed to enter and must stay in a government-approved facility for ten days.

But it is the Balearic Islands, which were only added to the green list at the end of June, that are causing the most concern for the travel sector.

An ABTA spokesperson said: “The decision to move the Balearic Islands to the amber list is a step back for the travel industry.

“Thousands of travel jobs and businesses are in desperate need of a successful summer season, and this further emphasises the urgent need for tailored financial support for a sector that has struggled to make any meaningful revenue for almost 18 months now.”

However, from Monday, fully-vaccinated travellers returning to England, Scotland and Wales from amber list countries will no longer need to self-isolate or take an additional test on day eight.

It is hoped this will minimise the disruption for vaccinated holidaymakers, but quarantine for non-vaccinated travellers remains a significant obstacle.

The ABTA spokesperson added: “Consumer confidence is essential if the industry is to trade its way out of this crisis, so the government must be more transparent about the criteria being used to move countries between the green, amber and red lists to allow travel businesses and customers alike to plan ahead.

“The government also needs to continue to capitalise on the successful vaccine rollout by expanding the green list in line with scientific evidence and reducing the need for and cost of testing, which is a significant barrier to travel for many people.

“Sufficient border control resource must also be provided at our ports and airports to help make travel as smooth as possible.”

Also today, Bulgaria and Hong Kong were added to the green list and Croatia and Taiwan to the green watchlist, meaning passengers arriving in England after 04:00 on Monday will no longer need to quarantine on arrival.

Croatia and Taiwan have been added to the green watchlist in recognition that these countries and territories are at risk of moving from green to amber.

Before travelling to England, everyone needs to take a pre-departure test and complete a passenger locator form regardless of where they are coming from.

If arriving from a green list destination, travellers will also be required to take a day two PCR test.

Arrivals from amber list countries and territories who are not fully vaccinated will need a day two and day eight test, and to quarantine for ten days.

The test to release scheme remains an option for non-fully vaccinated travellers returning from amber countries and territories to shorten their quarantine period.

Virginia Messina, WTTC senior vice president, said: “This will throw summer holidays into disarray for tens of thousands of people.

“Businesses given the lifeline of holidays to the Balearics will also be left floundering as bookings collapse and customers clamour for refunds, piling on further financial pressure.

“There may be some good news with Croatia and Bulgaria moving up the scale and being added to the green list.

“But the overall impact is one of confusion, which will only deter more Brits from holidaying abroad as the summer season slips away.”

TUI to offer permanent flexible working in UK | News

TUI is moving to permanent flexible working in the UK following 16 months of home working due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The majority of office-based employees in the UK have worked from home since the start of the pandemic in March last year.

During this time, the company sought to embrace the shift realising that almost all office-based roles could be done remotely. 

TUI conducted colleague research to understand their views on ways of working, with many citing they have adjusted their working practices and have discovered benefits, including a better work life balance, that they would like to continue with once the pandemic is over.

As part of the new ways of working, TUI employees will only be required to attend the office once a month to attend face to face team meetings or collaboration events, enabling individuals to make their own choice about how often they would like to work in an office environment.

While offices will remain open individuals will be able to decide what working environment works for them.

Recognising the importance of transitioning to a permanent flexible working approach, the organisation has created a new workspace director.

This role will be responsible for workspace portfolio across the UK and Ireland and will have the accountability to define and implement a workspace strategy.

Belinda Vazquez, workspace director of TUI UK & I, said: “At TUI we embrace the concept that work is something we do, not somewhere we go.

“We have listened to our employees in order to define a clear framework that ensures ultimate flexibility, whilst creating positive experiences that enable all colleagues to feel like they belong and are valued.”

United Airlines Ventures (UAV) has invested in electric aircraft start up Heart Aerospace.

The company is developing the ES-19, a 19-seat electric aircraft that has the potential to fly customers up to 250 miles before the end of this decade.

In addition to investment, United Airlines has conditionally agreed to purchase 100 ES-19 aircraft, once the aircraft meet safety, business and operating requirements.

Mesa Airlines, a key strategic partner for United in bringing electric aircraft into commercial service, has also agreed to add 100 ES-19 aircraft to its fleet, subject to similar requirements.

UAV is building a portfolio of companies that focus on innovative sustainability concepts and create the technologies and products necessary to build a carbon-neutral airline and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goals.

The deal also comes alongside Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV).

UAV and BEV are among the first investors in Heart Aerospace, demonstrating confidence in the design and creating potential for Heart to fast track the ES-19 introduction to market as early as 2026.

Ryanair unveils plans for pilot recruitment drive | News

Ryanair plans to recruit upward of 2,000 new pilots over the next three years as the low-cost carrier recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The airline has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 Max aircraft, with more than 200 still on order.

Ryanair people director, Darrell Hughes, said: “As we take delivery of more than 210 Boeing 737-8200 aircraft, Ryanair will recruit 2,000 or more pilots over the next three years to fill positions created by this growth.

“This is great news for experienced and aspiring pilots but also for our own pilots who will enjoy fast tracked promotions.

“Throughout the pandemic, Ryanair has worked closely with our people to save jobs and we are delighted to start planning for a return to growth over the coming years as we recover from the Covid-19 crisis.”

Ryanair claimed no pilots had been made redundant over the past year, and thus none of the new jobs are replacing losses during the pandemic.

The carrier said most of its captain vacancies are created by new aircraft deliveries and will be filled by internal promotions.

In turn, this creates opportunities for replacement first officers, and ultimately new cadet pilots who can kickstart their pilot career with Ryanair so they can grow into the next generation of first officers and captains.

Training courses take place through 2021 to be ready for next summer for positions all over Europe.
